Overall Season Review

Season 6 has to the most unorganized season I've seen on SNL. The cast was lackluster, sketches are terrible (mostly during the first 11 episodes). The writer's stike in 1981 might've been a major cause in the season, making it worse than it already was. Bill Murray's episode was the best in the season, making every other episode look below mediocre. Even the behind-the-scenes stories are more interesting than the sketches.

Overall Rating - 4.6/10

S6 Ep1 - Host: Elliot Gould

November 13, 1980

So the season was off with a pretty rocky start. There’s a lot of sexual jokes, and some don’t even have a punchline. It was pretty bad, and I started to like Elliot Gould as a host.

S6 Ep2 - Host: Malcolm McDowell

November 22, 1980

Bro, there was no jokes in that Negro Republican sketch. It just seems like they cut it short. The Tobacco Growers of America sketch felt more like a comedy special from Gilbert Goddfried than a P.S.A. I liked Joe Piscopo's performance in Weekend Update, hope I get to see more of him soon.

This episode also features what is arguably the worst sketch in SNL, titled "Jack the Stripper" or "Royal Strippers". Personally, I didn't like this sketch because it just wasn't funny.

The rest of these sketches have noticeably gotten a lot more boring as this episode goes on.

S6 Ep3 - Host: Ellen Burstyn

EDDIE MURPHY???

I kid you not, as soon as Eddie Murphy finished his performance in Weekend Update, the whole audience started getting giddy again.

When Aretha Franklin was playing "Can't Turn You Loose", I forgot it wasn't based on a Blues Brothers song.

Not gonna' lie, this episode isn't as bad as I thought.

S6 Ep4 - Host: Jamie Lee Curtis

This was a pretty forgetable one. I liked the dynamic of Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo in their sketches.

S6 Ep5 - Host: David Carradine

December 20, 1980

That Don Pardo impression was pretty impressive.

This season's christmas episode was alright. So far, this might be my favorite Rocket Report sketch, maybe it's because it's not improvised like all the others. Mr. Bill's comeback seems a little out of nowhere. What the hell were The Pirates of Penzance doing in their musical performance??

Fagetabowdit.

I think this season is starting to find its footing.

S6 Ep8 - Host: Robert Hays

"You call them mushrooms, I called them magic."

This might be the first time I've hear appluase for a weekend update. 14 Karet Soul made a pretty good performance. Not much to say, it's just... MEH! I can't believe I actually thought it was about to find its footing, it always go back to shit.

S6 Ep9 - Host: Sally Kellerman

I swear, every time I blink, there's already a new sketch happening.

S6 Ep10 - Host: Debroah Harry

Eddie as the Weekend Update anchor? Wait... Newsbreak? Dude wtf is going on, especially with the Where's Cooter sketch.

S6 Ep11 - Host: Charlene Tilton

February 21, 1981

"Listen here, Ronny-baby, if you want to save money, WHY DON'T YOU LET NANCY TO SHOP AT SEARS"

This episode wasn't that bad. I liked the Charles Rocket plot that happened throughout the episode, SNL Sports had a crazy game, the episode also featured the word "fuck" twice, leaving everyone in shock during the end and- ... Holy shit... HOLY SHIT! MISTER ROBINSON!!!

S6 Ep12 - Host: Bill Murray

March 7, 1981

FINALLY, MORE OSCAR PREDICTIONS!!

Wow, this was actually a really great episode, loved almost every sketch. It was nice to see an old cast member host the show.

S6 Ep13 - Host: Chevy Chase(?)

April 11, 1981

"Hello, I'm Chevy Chase, and you still aren't"

Quite the nostalgic cold open.

This episode is also the first episode with Dick Ebersol as the producer. No monolouge this time, if anything, I don't think Chevy was even the host. Overall, these last two episodes gave this season a much needed boost. Al Franken would've been a great producer if Lorne left, and his recap on Weekend Update was hilarious. I wish Franken and Davis did host that next week. Thank god I managed to finish this god damn season.
